This will be the last time I visit Boggy Tank in 2007

STELLER'S JAY

Getting a good photo of a Steller's Jay where you can see the face detail is sometimes very hard to do.
That's because the head is much darker than the rest of the bird's body.

From what I have seen here are 2 typical Steller's photos.

***********************************************

If you can change how and where the camera meters the light & you can change the exposure so there is some detail in the head of this bird. I most always set my camera's light meter to "SPOT". This will cause the camera to expose only in the area where you put the "SPOT" And you should get images somehting like this.

**************************************

By exposing for the head the bright blue tail feathers still came out just fine.
I'm not saying this is a 100% fool proof way to do it, but it works for me.

A couple more.

It's dark but I can still see its eye.

****************************************

Hope this information has helped.

*******************************************************

Here I wanted to see the front/top of the head, I believe I can crop it a little more to get what I wanted in the image below.

Yes, I can see the all the white marks on the head and the bill and eye.

Through the windshield of my van

**********************************************

Another windshield shot. A car makes a good blind but you need to have the window down.
Shooting through the windshield is not good.

*********************************************************

Through the windshield, sun is partially to the front and behind the bird, I'll call this a back lit image.
However I can see the eye. Using a flash which I should have done sometimes gives you a flash back in the glass of the windshield.

They sure loved that peanut butter.
