When photographing a black object like the Raven and you want good feather detail some time you need over expose or bracket you shots.
Sorry folks I could not find my comb this morning so I came as is.
Now here's the story. If you want good feather detail you can opt to photograph me in this type of a setting so most everything is about the same light value.
****************************************************
Here I was photographed using a flash unit in TTL mode.
This allows the flash to light up my feathers and in many cases it will let the back ground show also.
This is called using fill flash.
**************************************************************
If you don't have a flash unit and want to see my feather detail in your photo you will have to over expose,
this cause you to loose the back ground.
*************************************************
And if you bracket more you be able to see more feather detail.
Please note in this image I have over exposed so much you can now see the eye color.
Bracketting has to do with those little plus and minus signs on your camera, the + will let in more light and - will keep more light.
