Least Grebe

***************************************************************

The smallest of the Grebes, in fact, I think it's the smallest of about any water bird.

On a dark surface and not moving this bird could be right in front of you and you may not see it as long as its back end was not facing you.

This Grebe can't be much over 8 inches with a narrow black bill, but that bright yellow eye gives it away right a way.

I found this Grebe on what is called the "Key Hole Pond" at the "Sweet Water Wet Lands" just north of Tucson, Arizona just off I-10 at Rigs road.

If you are having a difficult time seeing the Grebe look below.

HAAA, this is much better, it's out in the sun light and can be seen very easily

Notice that when in the sun light it seems to take on a brownish color.

I found it very easy to spot especially if it was swimming away from you.

See what I mean?? :-))

This is a back lit photo so it seems to a bit washed out because I had to over expose it about 2 stops in order to get any details in it.
I was very much surprised to see that you can actually the black spot in its eye.

I really like a front view that shows both eyes.
Some people think a bird can only see from one side of it head at a time.
