TID-BITS

05/15/066

****************************************************************

I believe I shall change the name of the Grand Canyon to,

OLD SMOKY CANYON

Inasmuch as it seems that every time in the last few months
I have been there it has been filled with smoke from what the park rangers call

("A PRESCRIBED BURN")

There's nothing worse than a car full of nice pine smoke.

Helps your eyes burn & water so you can't see where your driving.

Causes coughing, choking, & nose running.

Plus any one of a dozen other discomforts.

I don't know why they have to burn the under brush
right along side the road you have to use to get from look-out point to look-out point.

This trip (05/09/06) it was super bad, you couldn't see or breath because of the smoke.

I staid in the small town of Tusayan approximately 2 miles before you enter the canyon.

The smoke completely obscured the whole town. In fact,
I drove right past my motel entrance 2 times before I found it.

OH; it was really bad this trip!

**************************************************************

PLUS!!!

Do you think they gave any thought to the fact that this is the nesting time for a lot of tree cavity nesting birds and ground nesting birds.

Wonder how many nest were deserted and or chicks
were burnt up or died from affixation do to the smoke.

Also there were other types of wild to be considered.

This Elk was not in the immediate area where the burn was the greatest.

However one female Elk did get hit and killed by a vehicle in the area where the smoke was very heavy. But in all fairness I can not say it was because of the smoke that the driver did not see it, or the driver was traveling to fast to stop in time to keep from hitting it.

*****************************************************************************

As you go through the toll gate of the Grand Canyon this is your first view.

OH, What a beautiful site to behold.

*********************************************

A little farther in,

Hey, I aint report'n nothin.

****************************************************

No matter where you looked there was SMOKE, and plenty of it.

I finally got into the clear & out of the smoke
but I could see ahead that it was going to a short lived situation.

*****************************************************

OH, wow, why do they let us drive here, or, better yet, why am I driving down this road.

**********************************************

Don't worry, I am not stopped like so many of the nitwits that do stop to take photos.

I just pointed my camera out the drivers side window and snapped the shutter.

***********************************************

It may not look like much of a fire but you could feel the heat as you drove by.

*****************************************************

As you probly can tell this is out the passenger's side window.

Many drivers did stop to try and photograph the fire but were promptly sited by the park rangers. (GOOD)

***************************************************

SO THAT YOU TOO MAY ENJOY THE SPECTACULUAR AND BEAUTIFUL VIEW OF THE

GRAND CANYON

I HAVE ENLARGED THIS LAST IMAGE, JUST FOR YOUR VIEWING PLEASURE.

OH, WHAT A GORGEOUS OLE GRAND CANYON IT IS,
NOW, ONLY IT I COULD JUST SEE IT.

It is now 05/16/06 and I believe it is still burring, I think I shall call before driving up again.

Just think, if I had come from a foreign country to see the canyon. What a disappointment it would be.
