Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel

Spermophilus lateralis

*********************************************************

Inasmuch as I could not find a map showing the Squirrel's entire range,
I made this one showing the location that I found these Squirrels in Arizona.

The above map is not to good so I made a cut out of the area.

The maps are not to any scale.

While spending a few days at Big Lake in the North East area of Arizona, and just South of the Springerville/Eagar area,
I happen to find these Squirrels playing a round an old dead tree stump.

They did not seem to be the least big timid about me being in their area.
In fact with a few sunflower seeds thrown on the ground they became even more friendly and less timid.

In the 3 days I was there photographing these Squirrels I noticed
they never did put their tails up on their backs as other Squirrels do that I have seen.

Also rather than having a nice bushy tail,
their's was round in shape and shorter than other Squirrel tails I have seen

******************************************

You may think you see some similarity to the
Harris' Antelope Ground Squirrel here, but take another look
and compare the two by clicking HERE.

************************

Note the short small round shaped tail.
You may/might also note this is a male Squirrel.

A better view of its back and tail.

Thanks for stoppin by, & U'all come back and visit again ya'hear.
