For years I have looked for The eyed click beetle, Alaus oculatus (Linnaeus),

Every time I have gone out to do my bird photography and have been in a wooded areas where there are dead/decaying logs I have spent much time looking for this beetle.

While climbing the mountain in Madera** Canyon in search of the elusive Aztec Thrush I saw a nick yellow & black Click Beetle. perched on the end of a dead decaying log.

** South central Arizona off Interstate 19 which runs south from Tucson to the Mexican border.

Take the 3thd Green Valley exit and follow the signs.

Click beetles are elongated, parallel-sided. They range in size and color by species. The eyed click beetle, Alaus oculatus (Linnaeus), reaches 1-½ inches in length and is beautifully marked with prominent oval eye spots. When placed on their backs, these beetles characteristically "click", to cause their bodies to flip in the air to right themselves. Larvae, called "wireworms,"
