BUNTIN LAZULIG

LAZULI
I guess the best way to tell you how it is pronounced is to break it apart.
[ Laz - U - li ]
While traveling in the south east U.S.
I found folks pronounced it [ La-zoo-lee ].
More than likely the bird was named after the stone Lapis Lazuli.
Because of the male's blue color. (azure)

Below photos taken at an earlier date
Photos for the most part taken at Wally & Marion Paton's in Patagonia, Arizona.
May, 1999.
Some may have been from my stay at the Cave Creek Ranch in Portal, Arizona 1997.
Male Lazuli Bunting.
Approximately 6 inches long. Basically is a ground foraging bird. Eats insects, seeds and some grasses.
It also will eat wild oats. It has been know for this bird to hybridize with the Indigo Bunting.
If you see this bird and live in the middle section of the state (Arizona) it is just migrating through.

Two female Lazuli Buntings.

Not a very good photo, but shows the female side view.

Because of the coloring around the eye, this may be an immature male, or it might just a female.

Male Lazuli during his molt.

I'm going to say this is his winter coat. I haven't found any where that the bird changes its coat in the winter,
but this photo was taken in the winter.
