I put the question mark in because I really don't know if this a Pied Avocet. Photographed at the Salton Sea, 02/97 near the Red Hill Marina.

Photographed with a Nikon f4. Lens, APO AF f4.5 800 mm, with a 2X & a 1.4 tele converter on it. Besides being a little soft focused, there is a little camera movement because I did not use a cable release.

This bird more than likely is an escapee from a zoo or private aviary. These Pied Avocet's normal living area is in Europe. I will put up a map showing some the locations they are found in.

Avocet's legs are very long and their toes are slightly webbed. Mostly feeding on mussels, crustaceans, insects & less often on fish, reptiles & vegetable matter. They use a sideways sweeping movement of the bill, skimming the surface of the water. The eggs are incubated by both parents, and the young are attended by both parents. There normally 4 eggs.

Recurvirostridea Avocet Family 6 species.

AFRICA

This map is not to any scale, nor does it absolutely represent, the absolute location of these birds.
It's just a generalization of where they would be normally found in the wild.
