Later on that night while sitting in my lawn chair next to one of the Hummingbird feeders,
half in this world, half in dreamland, I was suddenly awakened
by many things flying all around my head. As you can well imagine, I am no longer sleepy.
In the haste of jumping up out of my chair I dropped my flash light breaking it.
I ran stumbling back into the cabin to get another light.
Upon coming back out to the feeders I was totally dumb founded, and or amazed at what I saw.
There were dozens, maybe even hundreds of them. Ziging, zaging all around me.
ZAP, one lit on the bill of my cap.
Eye ball to eye ball we stared at each other.
Zap, another lit hanging on to the edge of my shirt pocket.
The air in the front of my cabin was alive with flapping wings.
Well by now now you may have guessed what was going on.
So, rather than talking about it any longer, let's take a look at what I saw.

Please don't stare at me while I am eating.

AH; I finally found it.
***************************

OH; that was so good I really hate to leave.

OK folks that's it, I'm full of sugar water, and now it's off to the BAT-ROOM for me.
BYE.
Now you know the rest of the story.
And BATS the truth.
*******************************
The Bats you have seen are the Mexican long-tongued or long nosed bats.
They are more abundant in the country from which they get their name.
They occur in Arizona from the Chiricahuas to the Santa Catalinas and Boboquivaris.
The long-tongued-nosed is actually a leaf-nose bat, one of the 3 species in Arizona.
Wingspan is 13 to 14 inches.
It is said that only the pregnant females move north into Arizona in the summer.
After the female born their young, she will carry it in-flight for
approx. 3 weeks after which it can fly on its own.
The lack of lower incisors give some insight as to it diet.
Its staples are pollen and nectar.
However as you have just seen in these photos, they can very
effectively empty a quart Hummingbird feeder in about 5 minutes.
If you should ever run across a Bat roost please do not disturb it.
