The London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona

If you came from the Pacific Loon page and want to go back click HERE

The London Bridge that is here in Lake Havasu City isn't falling down, but at one time in London it was in such poor condition they stopped using it.

The London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona is as solid as a rock.

How did it get from London England to Lake Havasu City, Arizona?

Let's not get ahead of our selves. I have seen in books that the first bridge was built in 43 AD. Soon after, the London Bridge was built in approx. 984 AD. That bridge was pulled down when a ship which was oar driven tied a rope to it and rowed off with it. Then a stone bridge was built in 1176 AD ( guess I don't have to say AD any longer) This stone bridge took 33 years to complete & it stood for 600 years. In 1824 the present London bridge was was built and then reconstructed in 1971 in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

In 1962 it was discovered that the London Bridge was in deed falling down. It was sinking into the Thames river do to increased traffic over it. It was then that Robert McCulloch learned that the British Government was putting the bridge up for sale. He bought the bridge for $2,460.00. It was taken apart stone by stone and brought to Lake Havasu City, Arizona and reconstructed.

Each piece was marked with 4 numbers. The first 2 indicated which span , the 2nd noted which row of stones, & the last 2 numbers indicated which position in that row. During its disassembly they noticed that there were already numbers on the stones, so, this means they used the same system to build the original one. The bridge pieces were shipped some 10,000 miles from England to Long Beach, California and trucked to Lake Havasu City, Arizona. An engineer from England was in charge of the reconstruction in Lake Havasu City. The bridge was completed on October 10, 1971.

And now YOU know the rest of the story!

As you start to walk across the bridge, this is one of the signs you will encounter.
What you can't see is the sign that is facing the other direction which brought a smile to my face.

**************************************

Maybe we had better take a closer look at that sign.

If you think about it, it is a bit humorous.

Remember they put numbers on the stones so that they would know how to reconstruct the bridge.
If you look closely, you can still see a lot of them even now.
