Collared Peccary
Dicotyles tajacu

Also called Javelina.
Pronounced "Have-a-leena"

Map and range not to any scale.

I have found these very hard to find on the desert. However, if I leave my lunch/sandwich on the ground for very long, they will most always find me, or the sandwich.

You are wondering if I have a good set of teeth? Scroll down and it out.

I can bite most any thing I want with these.

AS a rule you won't see just one Javelina, they normally travel in groups of 2 or as many as 8.
As I have view them, they always like to rub them selves on trees, big rocks, or each other. In the above photo you can see the inconspicuous tail on the one on the right of the image. If they become stressed I have seem raise their tails while running. Most of the time it roots in the ground for food. Many times you see it down on its front knees rooting or eating. It you will observe closely when they walk, it is on there front part of their front hooves. Food consist of the Prickly-pair cactus, Spines and all. This cactus also provides water for them. They also will eat mesquite fruit, lechuguilla.

Do not try to locate these animals in the mid day heat, you won't find them. They most likely will taking a siesta in a rooted out mud hole, under a shade tree, or in a cave. The best time to see them is in the early morning or late after noon.
