Zebratailed Lizard
Callisaurus darconoides

Can grow up to 9 inches plus in length.

Lives in low vegetation, sandy or gravel like soil.
12 subspecies in all, but only 3 in our range.

Map and range not to any given scale.

*******************

This pose is normally the way you will see the Zebratailed lizard
should you meet one along a desert trail.

************************

I am showing this Zebratailed lizard because it's a bit different looking.
In the photo below I shall point the differences.

***************************

Arrow 1: Shows a yellow tint to the lower back & sides. Simular to a Side-blotched lizard.
Arrow 2: Shows the lack of color in the leg stripes. Also simular to a Side-blotched lizard.
Arrows 3 & 4: are pointing to, 2 side stripes that wrap around the under side of this lizard, but not over the back.
Arrow 5: Is pointing to a shoulder bar, I also do not see this on the other Zebratailed lizards.
However the tail indicates that this is a Zebratailed lizard.

What do we have here?
A young lizard, female lizard, an X-Zebratailed/Side-blotched lizard?

Not having a photo of a Side-blotched lizard to show you, it will be pretty hard for you to decide on this.
You could get a book and look. I am using a National Audubon Society Nature Guides "DESERTS" by James A. MacMahon, ISBN 0-394-73139-5.

All of these photos were taken at the Nature Conservancy 06/2000
[ Hassyampa River Preserve on state route 60 ] just south of Wickenburg, AZ.

In that area the ranges do over lap.

As you can see, I have tried to photo the Zebratailed lizard from
several angles in order to see why that "one" was so different.
